The print of "Young Portugese" arrived today. It's finer and more beautiful than I expected.......and my expectations were very high already, just from visiting the online galleries. I'm really thrilled to have this piece, and I know it will be only the first purchase I make of art work by Douglas Simonson.
Paul Cadmus is the only other artist that comes to mind whose drawings of men have the same lyricism and erotic intensity, and in the long run, I think D.S.'s work has an insightful sexual joyousness that Cadmus lacks, fine as he is. You never get the feeling that Cadmus's men would ever laugh in bed...and it's not difficult at all to imagine Doug's men in any state, from lewd to laughing, and everything in between. There's always the sense that if you look long enough, a Simonson nude is going to start flirting with you....

DREAMING arrived today. As usual, with a piece of your work, it is more beautifully drawn and more lyrical, more sensual than it appeared to be online. It's stunning. Every pencil stroke is like a perfect stitch in some flawless, intricately designed and executed fabric. Douglas does that. Some artists paint pictures or make drawings of people. When DS is finished he doesn't show you a picture of the person...he shows you the person. Big difference. Stunned the first time I saw the website, never thought to find a shared sensibility! From the start, I loved the subtleties of flesh glow and reflected light on planes and curves. I like seeing the models honored, too, now. I love the quirky expressions, including the shy and the doubtful ones.
